Strengthening wellbeing through a kaupapa māori approach

What is Kia Piki Te Ora?

Kia Piki Te Ora is a Kaupapa Māori public health approach to suicide prevention with over 20 years  experience.

Refreshed in 2023 through nationwide co-design, including Muriwhenua, to better meet today’s needs.

Kia Piki Te Ora works across prevention, intervention, and postvention to reduce risk and strengthen community response.

He Whai mō Te Ora

He Whai Mo Te Ora is about building community strength to protect life and wellbeing for our whānau, hapū, and communities.

This kaupapa is about identifying and supporting dedicated Pouwhirinaki within our communities — trusted people willing to stand steady when whānau are experiencing suicidal thoughts or deep distress.

We strengthen confidence, awareness, and practical response so conversations about suicide happen safely and directly — without panic, avoidance, or minimising.

This is collective readiness.

This is protecting life together.

Join us and be part of a movement that offers hope, strength, and support where it’s needed most.

Te Ropu mahi tahi o Muriwhenua

We cannot do this mahi alone.  So mobilising services, people and communities in the call to action to prevent suicide is one of the most important actions in our Muriwhenua Suicide Prevention Strategy.

Healing Wānanga

The Kia Piki Te Ora and Te Hiku Rongoā Māori Collective teams hosted a Healing Wānanga on 17 November 2025 at Te Whare Rongoā

(Tihei Wā Mauri Ora), attended by over 80 whānau, kaimahi and practitioners. The day created a safe, culturally grounded space for whānau to engage in mirimiri, romiromi, rongoā Māori, Taonga Pūoro and open kōrero around suicide and wellbeing.

Whānau left feeling supported, connected and reminded that healing is possible.
