Kia Piki Te Ora:
Healing Wānanga at Waimanoni Marae

The Kia Piki Te Ora Māori Suicide Prevention Team recently hosted a profoundly moving healing wānanga at Waimanoni Marae in Awanui, held from the 12th to the 14th of April. This event aimed to support Muriwhenua whānau affected by suicide, providing a space for healing through rongoā Māori and the wisdom of our ancestors.

A Weekend of Healing and Connection

Over the course of the weekend, the marae became a sanctuary for whānau seeking solace and guidance. The wānanga offered an opportunity to connect with tohunga Māori and rediscover the healing practices of our tūpuna. The event was open to all in the community, welcoming anyone who wished to join in the journey of healing.

The atmosphere was filled with aroha and kotahitanga as whānau engaged in various healing practices. Miri-miri (traditional Māori massage) was a significant feature, offering physical and spiritual relief to many attendees. Healing through rāranga (weaving) was another highlight, facilitated by Jo Murray and her dedicated team, who shared their skills and matauranga with participants.

Key Presentations and Activities

There were an array of presentations, providing vital approaches, tools and strategies for whānau looking to embrace wellness and navigate the journey of healing. The wānanga also featured a range of naturally sourced rongoā Māori balms and remedies, available for whānau to use and take home.

Ron Baker was another esteemed guest who shared his whakāaro and learned wisdom on the subject, providing invaluable insights and support. The presence of tohunga Māori throughout the event served as a steadfast foundation, anchoring the entire gathering and providing unwavering support for everyone.

A Celebration of Whānau and Culture

The wānanga was not only a time for healing but also a celebration of whānau and being Māori. Beautiful kai was provided, nourishing both the body and spirit of those in attendance. The event brought together various stakeholders and experts, each contributing their knowledge and support to the kaupapa.

The success of this healing wānanga is just the beginning for Kia Piki Te Ora. This event is the first of many planned kaupapa aimed at supporting the whānau of Muriwhenua. The team is dedicated to continuing this important mahi, fostering an environment where healing and wellbeing are first and foremost.

Kia Piki Te Ora is committed to leading these efforts in Muriwhenua, ensuring that whānau have access to the rauemi and support they need to thrive. This wānanga exemplifies the power of coming together as a community to practice healing and move forward from the pain of suicide.

Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou katoa who participated and contributed to the success of this wānanga. Your presence and tautoko are what made this event truly special.
