Empowering Whānau Through He Whai mō te Ora: Suicide Prevention Wānanga

Join us on 17 October at Roma Marae for He Whai mō te Ora, a wānanga focused on suicide prevention, designed to strengthen and empower Māori whānau. Through kōrero and cultural connection, we will equip ourselves with tools to support one another during times of distress.

Raising Awareness, Strengthening Whānau

This wānanga aims to build confidence in recognising warning signs and understanding risk factors while fostering supportive conversations. It's about empowering whānau to take ownership of their wellbeing.

Māori communities face unique challenges when it comes to mental health, and this wānanga recognises that solutions must come from within. By harnessing our strengths, values, and tikanga, He Whai mō te Ora seeks to empower individuals to become leaders and whānau champions in suicide prevention.

A Day of Learning and Connection

Led by kaumātua and mental health experts, the wānanga will cover suicide prevention, risk factors, and practical tools. The day includes whanaungatanga, group sessions, and cultural activities like waiata and kēmu Māori.

Whānau Champions: Leading the Way

The wānanga will establish Whānau Champions, individuals committed to sharing knowledge and resources within their communities to create lasting change.

As a whānau champion, your role will be to kōrero with whānau, share resources, and provide ongoing support. The vision is for these champions to be the connectors between whānau and the resources available—both locally and nationally.

Let’s Build a Stronger Future Together

The whakataukī Nāu te rourou, nāku te rourou, ka ora ai te iwi underpins the entire wānanga. By combining our knowledge, strengths, and resources, we can build a future where whānau are empowered to address mental health issues in ways that are culturally meaningful and effective.

Whether you have been directly affected by suicide or are simply passionate about the wellbeing of your whānau, He Whai mō te Ora offers a space for everyone to contribute, learn, and grow. Together, we can create a future where Māori whānau thrive, resilient and ready to face the challenges of tomorrow.

How to Get Involved

Registrations are open via Eventbrite. Join us to help build a future where Māori whānau are resilient and ready to face challenges.
